Fort Wilkins State Park is more than just the fort! Beaches for rock hounds looking for those Lake Superior Agates and checking out the lighthouse. Lake Fanny Hooe for fishing, kayaking, and swimming. Access to trails for hiking and mountain biking. And of course, the fort. Fort Wilkins is a wonderfully restored copper era historic site. Most buildings are open to exploring and learning the history of the area and the copper boom. Also, a campground, which you should reserve in advance if you plan on staying. Finally, nice little gift shop to get your Copper Harbor and U.P. memorabilia. It is absolutely worth a visit. Have been there several times in my life and have enjoyed it as an adult and as a kid.
Such a cool and informative state park. The views everywhere you look are incredible. The history that you can walk through is unmatch by anything else in michigan
This is one the most beautiful places we've been. The campground was clean, spacious. Great place to view the Milky Way from the beach. Rocks are all over every beach in the Keweenaw! The Fort is worth the trip, the beaches, the rocks the food..everything in this area is spot on. We traveled during peak fall colors and it was breathtaking.
We camped here for three nights, and this campground is really nice! The bathrooms and showers are clean. There is a large, new playground with lots of fun things for children to play on. The fort buildings are highly informative of what fort life was like. The campsites are large, and the campground sits on a nice body of water. We really enjoyed our stay! The only downside was no beach.
What a funny story. Basically they used this fort for 3 years, closed it for the Mexican war and then opened it for 2 years and then realized how dumb it was to have a fort in the middle of nowhere.
The views from the park are really cool as it sits on this idyllic lake on one side and lake Superior on the other.
It has a nice campground (crowded but nice).
Very cool spot rich with history. The fort is a great spot and the camp grounds are worth thr drive. Our campground host was Art and he super hospitable even we rolled into the campsite late. The general store had some odds and ends we needed with a bonus treat of ice cream. I would def return to this area.
A state park, so the sticker or day pass is required, but no other admissions. Gift shop, with modern restrooms, Historic buildings to walk through, takes you back in time, with building & decor from the period. Nice views on the lake as well.
A great museum of artifacts from local heritage and history. Beautiful trails for walking and a wonder experience for all!
